State Highway 8, Beaumont, Clutha
This 24-km walking or biking track along the edge of the Clutha River follows part of the original East Bank Track and the Roxburgh railway line. There are picnic spots and interpretation signs noting sites of historical interest along the way. The Lonely Graves Historic Reserve is one of these and the Horseshoe Bend footbridge is another. The track starts at the Beaumont Bridge, an important link providing the gateway to Central Otago. The present bridge dates from 1887.
It was originally a toll bridge and took three and a half years to build. At the other end is Millers Flat is a small town (population about 200). Alison says "The road part is very pot-holed which makes for a very slow bumpy trip but it is ok even for a small car."
