111 Thames Street, Oamaru, Waitaki
When one man died when the first Queen's hotel (1870) burned down on it's 10th anniversary, the owner determined that timber would not be used on the rebuild. He organised for prominent architectural firm Forrester and Lemon to draw up a big white stone public house, and the results are exactly as you see today.
The 1880 'Queen's Hotel' is an impressive two storey landmark on the corner of Wear and Thames, the centre of Oamaru's Whitestone district, and nearby to the Port Heritage Area. It has been named the Brydone since the 1950s.
You can still eat there, drink there and sleep there, and the reviews are good. If you want to try a meal elsewhere, famous Fat Sally's is across the road.
