108A Gala Street, Queens Park, Invercargill, Other
April 2018 The museum has been closed because the building failed to meet the seismic standard. The Southland Times is not happy.
Probably Invercargill's main attraction is the combined museum and art gallery. A distinctive feature is the tuatara breeding programme. (Tuataras are long-lived reptiles native to New Zealand). Also highly recommended are the exhibitions on New Zealand's wind-swept sub-antarctic islands and the audiovisual "Roaring Forties Experience".
An exhibition with local significance is "Burt Munro, The Making of a Legend." depicting the life of the motorcycle racer in relation to the film and Invercargill.
William Hodges Fellowship artist in residence: The William Hodges Fellowship artist in residence programme aims to bring significant New Zealand visual artists to Southland and allow them to work within and respond to the Southland environment and community while they are also making a contribution to the Southland community and its artists.
The residency takes place at Burwell house, Dee Street, Invercargill.
There is an intention as of November 2018 for the homeless Art Gallery and Museum to get together in a premises in the town centre.
