4 Grimmond Avenue, Ross, Westland
Right behind the main street of Ross, there is a small and peaceful lake which has been adorned with a Chinese Garden, West Coast style, a memorial to the Chinese Gold Miners who came to the area in the 1870s.
A pagoda, several sets of tables and chairs and an entrance arch are in place, and more planting is planned. The project is being led by locals, who also campained for a memorial installed across the track.
It is also based upon heritage from the same era, a plaque in the memory of Ross miner and farmer Samuel Mitchell VC, who won his award in the Land Wars and later drowned in the Mikonui River, aged 52.
If you visit the Ross Chinese Gardens, please feel free to send your photos to NZPlaces.
