Maketu

A famous pie shop, an historic church and a monument to the arrival of Maori provide interest at this seaside location. The Monument commemorates the landing of the Arawa Canoe in 1340.

Maketu has a surf lifesaving club and there are two holiday parks close by.

Migratory wading birds frequent the estuary. The Maketu sand spit one of the few places where the endangered New Zealand Dotterel attempts to nest.
