Unnamed Road, Lake Ohau, Waitaki
Deep in the Mackenzie Country is a Ski Area that operates a bit differently to other New Zealand Skifields, in that the large lodge is on the mountain. Well, halfway up the mountain, and it is not far to the snow from there. Now marketing themselves as a Snowfield, Ohau offers the ski-apres-ski style of holiday, an alternative to the standard kiwi venture involving driving all the leftover mud, snow, bruises and empty thermoses a couple of hours back to town before hitting the shower.
Throw in a bit of isolation, a scenic lake and views to the east, a leg of a the trendy Alps to Ocean cycle trail and great summer weather and you have quite a destination, managed by the same family for over 40 years.
