Nelson's climate with some of New Zealand's highest sunshine hours and the growing conditions it affords have made it a favoured place for people who like the idea of living off the land and don't mind its isolation. It has undoubtedly helped the longevity of the Riverside Community.
Riverside is not strictly cohousing since rather than having private ownership of the dwellings all property belongs to the community. But it is worthy of note having existed since 1941 when it was established by a "group of Christian Pacifists who, in the face of the 2nd World War, were eager to practice ways of communal living that were based on cooperation and sustainability."
Preferring not to label their enterprise a commune they call Riverside an intentional community.
Although the Riverside model is not in line with modern cohousing ideas which are focused on urban locations it is worth visiting the website and/or watching this video to understand how the community operates.
