Porika Road, Gowan Valley, Tasman
This designated fossicking area is representatives of the remnants of the Upper Howard Gold Area, which was worked in the 1930s depression, by men on a government subsidy, with little success.
What remains here to be seen is the Glenhope Scenic Reserve, which is along Howard Valley Road. From there, there are options to fossick two sections of the Louis Creek, by making use of the goldfield track which is still in place. The bend is out of bounds, but the upper sector splits in two, and at the top connects with the track to nearby New Creek.
There is a monument to miners, and the Department of Conservation maintains Booth's Cottage, which is an historical relic, not a tramping hut to sleep over in. There is another hut here called the 'Jewellery Store' along the way.
