Komene Road, Puniho-Tumahu, South Taranaki
Considered to be a regionally important ecosystem due to its high biodiversity this wetland and coastal dune system provides habitat for a large variety of native birds including spotted Dotterels (Tuturiwhat Pukunui ) which are threatened and nationally vulnerable.
The Waikirikiri Lagoon is part of the Komene 13B Maori Reservation. This Reservation has been set aside by the Maori Land Court on behalf of the beneficiaries for the purpose of: ' A marae. - Burial ground. - Fishing ground. ° Wildlife sanctuary.
Several campaigns relating to pest management, planting and control of peat plants have been implemented by the local community.
