Manawapou Road, Mokoia, South Taranaki
When this redoubt was built in 1865 the road ran along the coast. The redoubt was built to protect the line of advance into South Taranaki of General Cameron's troops. It has a classic form with bastion defences at two corners to cover all four sides. The site is on private land. Manawapou (the village) was sited across the road from the notice board. Here a famous meeting was held in 1854 which resolved to make no more land sales to the Pakeha. Inman's redoubt across the river was intended to protect river crossings from Maori attack.
