5 Stanners Street, Eltham-Normanby, South Taranaki
A small Taranaki town, population less than 2,000, which has not changed much so its original civic buildings have been preserved, Eltham is known as the cradle of the Taranaki dairy industry (the co-operative system in particular).
Enough cheese is produced here in the Fonterra plant (90,000 tonnes per year) to justify Eltham's claim to be the cheese capital of New Zealand. Cheese is cut shredded and packaged for consumers and food chains around the world, including Pizza Hut, McDonalds and Dominos .
The impressive Town Hall (built in 1910) and the former Courthouse are registered with the Historic Places Trust.
Film director Ian Mune in his comedy movie Came a Hot Friday, based on the book by Ronald Hugh Morrison, used Bridge Street as his background for 1949 New Zealand.
Eltham is the gateway to Lake Rotokare, a scenic, natural lake surrounded by native bush (to the east of the town), and to the man-made Lake Rotorangi.
