Wanaka Mount Aspiring Road, Skippers, Queenstown-Lakes

Raspberry Creek car park to Mt Aspiring Hut

Queenstown-Lakes Walks

Take the Mt Aspiring Road to the end. For the last few km you pass over several fords and the road is a little rough before you reach the car park at Raspberry Creek, 52 km from Wanaka.
Raspberry Creek car park to Mt Aspiring Hut is 4-5 hours return. A relatively easy walk up the West Matukituki Valley. However, be prepared for extreme weather.
The track follows the river flats most of the way, apart from crossing one small bluff. With rugged mountains on either side, you walk up a valley shaped during the Ice Ages when huge glaciers filled and scoured out most valleys. On the river flats you are likely to see - and hear - paradise ducks; harrier hawks, skylarks, pipits and spur-winged plovers may also be seen on the valley floors. Fantails, tomtits and rifleman inhabit the beech forest. Southern beech is the most common tree, but mountain beech, red beech and silver beech also grow in the Matukituki Valley.

Weather conditions may change rapidly.
Take warm, wet weather gear, sound footwear and extra food in case of emergencies.

A clear knowledge of your route and an appropriate map are advised.
