Tracing back to 1963, Aratoi, as the museum came to be called, has a mandate to serve the cultural interests of the Wairarapa region in preserving and showcasing its history and artists in a permanent collection as well as in changing exhibitions.
This regional museum features Wairarapa and Kahungunu stories in an award-winning building by Studio of Pacific Architecture.
An adjacent Wesley Church has been incorporated as an exhibition gallery and the adjoining cafe is a popular lunch spot.
