Hood Aerodrome is the venue for the bi-annual Wings over Wairarapa air show.
The aerodrome is named after George Hood, a pioneer Masterton aviator who disappeared forever trying to make the first Trans-Tasman air crossing in 1928. Another locally trained aviator Graeme Vivian Donald became a top pilot in the RAF before joining KLM.
In 1949, the RNZAF conducted aerial topdressing trials at Hood Aerodrome, using Avenger torpedo bombers. Superphosphate fertilizer was dropped on Wairarapa Hill country farms, proving that topdressing by air was practical. Hood Aerodrome is now home to the Vintage Aviator Ltd. an aircraft restoration and manufacturing company associated with Peter Jackson specialising in WW1 aircraft, engines and propellers. These can usually been be seen lined up in a guard of honour on ANZAC day (April 25). An offshoot of this business makes quality kitset model aircraft and accessories.
In the early 2000s, a daily Air New Zealand service provided a connection to Auckland, but was one of the first of the regional routes to be axed in several rounds of consolidation. There is a groundswell movement to reinstate some form of regular commuter flights but as yet nothing has eventuated.
In 2008 Jackson shot a critically acclaimed short film over two days here at Hood Aerodrome apparently receiving praise from Stephen Speilberg for his use of the groundbreaking new 'Red One Digital Camorder' and for the short shooting time. At the time the new technology was said to be about to revolutionise the film industry.
"Crossing The Line" is a ten minute WWI flying film, featured reenacted biplane dogfights, bayonet charges and was completed by a 30 cast and crew of only 30.
