142 Pakaututu Road, Patoka, Hastings
This is a 2.7km flat walking track in Hawke's Bay's best example of virgin lowland podocarp forest.
Dense stands of rimu, matai, miro and kahikatea dominate. The semi-parasitic native miseltoe can be found on some trees. Kereru, tui and bellbird (korimako) can be heard in the early mornings and late evenings, and though you may not see them, New Zealand's only native mammal, the long tailed bat, is said to live here.
There is a picnic shelter at the main entrance. Managed by DoC
