Monteiths boasts an amazing chain of brewing history dating to 1868, when a Stewart Monteith bought into the Phoenix brewery in Reefton. Phoenix later joined the Westland Brewing Company along with several others. There have been a few more name changes and other business moves over the years and Dominion Breweries ended up owning the lot, threatening the Greymouth plant with closure in 2001 but soon reneging.
The factory in Greymouth is still here and has been upgraded. You can take a tour, or visit the cafe and tasting room.
