One of the two castles in New Zealand, Cargill's Castle a Category 1 Historic place, is now looked after by a Trust. The mission of the Trust is to retain the castle as part of the cultural, historic and recreational fabric of Dunedin, A Dunedin landmark, the castle was designed by Frances William Petre. Edward Bowes Cargill was a prominent Dunedin business man and political leader.
Geotrips has information about the human and geological history telling us the tunnel to Tunnel Beach was excavated in the 1870s by John Cargill (a son of Captain William Cargill) so that the family could bathe at a secluded location away from the prying eyes of St Clair residents.
