Auckland Art Gallery - Toi o Tamaki

The finest building in the French Renaissance style in New Zealand,Auckland’s Art Gallery began its life as the city’s library. The building’s foundation stone was laid in June 1885 and the building opened in 1887. Superbly sited on a tight corner site on Wellesley Street, it is a magnificent building housing the largest and most comprehensive collection of New Zealand and international art in the country.

The appeal of the gallery has been enhanced by an extensive makeover, architecturally a joint venture between Archimedia Group and Sydney's FJMT, which opened in September 2011. A 'Pacific Pavillion' contrasts with the French Renaissance-style ‘chateau’ of 1887.

Auckland City Art Gallery was awarded World Building of the Yearat the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Singapore in October 2013.
Exhibitions drawn from the collection are shown in combination with touring shows.

The gallery is the home of the Chartwell collection, a collection of contemporary art from New Zealand and Australia held on long term loan.

At the website you can view 12,500 works on-line.
The gallery often has programmes for children. Check the website.
