1 Kinzett Terrace, The Wood, Nelson City
Amongst the faster moving features of Nelson, where road meets river, meets port, across the highway from Trafalgar Park, is a recreational hub named Kinzett Terrace, where various sporting facilities and clubs have made their home.
In 2012 Council looked to inject a reason to pause in the area by commissioning a 'gateway' sculpture, to heighten the sense of arrival to the city and link the city to the sea.
The result is Terry Stringer's 5.5 metre tall bronze 'Dance to the Music of Time', the name shared with a painting and a set of novels with different meanings. His meaning is further described as 'people and their lives are what make up our memories of time and history'. Sitting on a plinth designed to echo aspets of local architecture, the sculpture also represents the four seasons and references the bounty of the sea, the land and the people. "The profile of a child is created facing in from the North looking at future opportunities," Figures of a man and a woman are also incorporated.
