Cesspool Gorge

Cesspool Gorge is an unfairly titled locale of peace beauty on the strong and deep Arahura. The Department of Conservation respects it anyway, having placed a swingbridge over the Arahura at this point for trampers who want to go further inland or towards the Styx and Lake Kaniere. The way in is via Mill Road (old mining area) and then not far upriver from there. This is a route towards some serious West Coast tramping, with the main divide and the boundary with Canterbury, not far off as the crow flies, but a fair hike in boots. On Milltown Road is an accommodation house named Cowboy Paradise.
