Ongarue Tramway and Spiral - Waione Tram Mountain Bike Track

The tramway, now being restored is a remnant of the central North Island timber industry. The intention is to create a Central North Island Rail Trail which visitors can walk or bike, this part is a 65km stretch. Part of the trail already exists as the Waione Tram Mountain Bike Track.

Timber felling started early in here, and kept going until after WWII. The area was a major source of the fine rimu timbers which were used throughout the country in residential construction. The tramway and it's impressive spiral were integral to the business of moving the felled timber. Walkers and cyclists will traverse cuttings, embankments, streams, bridges and the spiral on the track.
