The "MTG" complex is a Napier cultural centre and home to a distinctive collection of art and objects. The original building, seen from Herschell Street, was designed by Napier architect Louis Hay. In 1977 a modernist theatre designed by Hawke’s Bay architect Guy Natusch was added. In 2013 a handsome extension designed by architect Richard Daniels and featuring artwork by Sara Hughes was completed. For a period the Museum's Director was Douglas Lloyd Jenkins the author of a number of New Zealand related design and architecture books.
