Allow 2.5 hours for this 5-km walk across farmland and bush to where Cook landed in 1769 to repair the Endeavour and take on fresh supplies. (From 1 August to 30 September the walkway is closed for the lambing season). Once you are there picnic and swim in the beautiful bay. There are great views across the Bay. For details of this easy walk and the story of the Endeavour's visit to Cooks Cove see the Doc website.
A midden with high archaeological value was discovered in 1983 on the southern bank of Cooks Cove. The evidence, including moa bone and the remains of a house suggests the site was occupied by a Maori village early in New Zealand's history (c 14th - early 15th century AD). In one layer of the evacuation animal, bird and fish bones were recovered and a cooking oven just below the layer contained two moa bone fish hooks. The layer probably dates to the late 15th century AD
