Like Napier, Hastings suffered in the 1931 earthquake. The rebuilding here in the Spanish Mission ( a style already adopted before the quake) and "art deco" styles resulted in a consistent group of buildings in the centre of the town providing an architectural heritage which has inspired subsequent building. Westermans building, now the home of the Information Centre, was designed by Edmund Anscombe in 1932. Near the Centre is a fine clock tower - the result of a design competition. See "Spanish Mission Hastings - Styles of Five Decades" by Peter Shaw.
In 2010 New Plymouth and Hastings were chosen as model communities—urban environments where walking or cycling is offered to the community as the easiest transport choice. Hawkes Bay prides itself on being a cycling mecca and promotes trails on which cyclists can explore the region.
