The town of Te Anau on the lake edge is a starting point for tours of Milford and Doubtful Sounds, two of the 14 fiords in Fiordland. A local tour visits the Te Anau glowworm caves after a boat trip across the lake. You can sample the world famous Milford Track by taking a day walk from Te Anau.
